Project 'Strip-Mural'

"Strip-Mural" is the title of the project, which is funded by the US Embassy and is being implemented by the Primary School "Bozidar Vukovic-Podgoricanin" at Konik. The aim of this project is social inclusion, education and raising youth awareness of environmental issues for students who are attending the school and form part of the RE population. Making the first comic-murals in Montenegro is the connection of two alternative forms of art in our country. By painting all the boards of this school, the comic-mural in Montenegro will become the longest painted strip-mural in the world.

The graphic designer and artistic director of the NGO AUT made the design for the comic mural, while the comic story was written by Asja Šašić, the producer and founder of the aforementioned non-governmental organization.

The story deals with several current topics that touch each individual: the growth of children and the impact of peer pressure, the marginalization of differences, and the misunderstanding of environments designed for young people and gentle minds - children.

Each painted side panel represents one episode of the comic book. Painted characters are specifically designed for this occasion and their characteristics are taken from the immediate environment in which the strip-mural is painted.

Thanks to a series of workshops that involved active participation of children from the school "Bozidar Vukovic Podoricanin", we got a better insight into the conditions of children's lives, as well as the social and cultural norms that influence their childhood development. Their creativity contributed to the development of stories and sketches.

The UNICEF Convention on the Rights of the Child was the fundamental document used to conceive and run workshops with children and obtain information from children for the development of the story. Special attention is paid to the respect of children’s rights in regard to: non-discrimination, best interests of the child, respect for child’s views, freedom of expression, freedom of thought, conscience and religion, freedom of association, protection of privacy, access to appropriate information, education, educational goals, free recreational and cultural activities, and children's work.
